I started with string 146 (tanglepatterns.com). This is the 2nd time in a week I've used it. I must really like it.
The Diva's family is focusing on summer fun stuff starting this week, so this is the last challenge she will be issuing for a while. HOWEVER, she has a lot of guests who will be picking up the slack on her website here. As for this week, we are to use the ubiquitous Tipple in a monotangle.

According to Linda Farmer over on tanglepatterns.com, "Umble" has been in Rick and Maria Roberts' portfolio of patterns for maybe a decade. But they have only just now released the instructions.
So the Diva at http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/ jumped at the earliest opportunity and made it a challenge. She said "The challenge this week is to try out the New-Old tangle: Umble! You can do a monotangle or just a regular old tile with umble somewhere on the premises." I liked Umble. I worked around with it off and on all day today before committing a tile to it. It could use some more work, but if I waited until I really have it nailed, I'll never get any challenges done. I started with String 098 (tanglepatterns.com). I used 2 other Zentangle(r) patterns, 'Nzepple and Diva Dance, as well as Garlic Cloves by Jacquelien Bredenoord. Thanks dear Diva! This week's Diva challenge is to be inspired by Beads of Courage. We could use beads as inspiration for our string, or for inspiration for our tangles, or perhaps be inspired by someone who is being particularly strong and courageous right now.
The Diva explained: "Beads of Courage is an Arts in Medicine that supports kids with chronic or life threatening illnesses and their families. These kids are amazing. And they more often than not have to deal with a lot on a daily basis. They see a lot of doctors, and on this program instead of getting a sticker or a lollipop for getting a needle or an X-Ray, or a test of some kind, they'd get a glass bead to represent that part of their medical journey....Some of the things you can collect beads for are: Needle pokes, overnight stays in hospital, isolation, mobility challenges like bed rest or casting, hair changes, tube insertions or removals, therapies, doctors appointments, surgeries, xrays, ultrasounds, infusions, radiation, oxygen/respiratory support, procedures." I was inspired by those around the world who are being persecuted for their faith. If you're not following the stories, you may be completely unaware of the many many Christians who are killed in gruesome ways every day because they believe in Christ. But it's not just Christians...martyrdom at the hands of zealots is changing the landscape in many countries. My tile doesn't represent any particular nation or religion or anything...They were just in my heart as I drew. I wish you could see this tile in person because I used gold paint on the oval "beads" of Linked by Vicki Murray. I also used Snugz by Terri Brown, Nipa (z(r) ) and some different Beadlines by Margaret Bremner. Learn more about Diva Challenges here This week the darling Diva challenged us to use All Boxed Up by Alice Hendon. I played around with this for a long time. Really enjoyed doing it, but never could get the look of some of her variations. My proportions seem all wrong. So I embellished only by using some wider lines.
I also used Balloya by Anya Lothrop and 'Nzeppell (z) Thanks Diva for bringing "All Boxed Up" to our attention. I'm going to work on it some more. Just got back from a trip where wifi connection was abysmal so I gave up entirely trying to get challenges submitted last week. Just as well, I was so busy I only got 2 of them done, anyway. So, here is my late submission to the Diva challenge #219 in which we were challenged to use ONLY straight lines. I really loved it. Now, I can't say that all the lines are actually straight, but they were supposed to be!!!
I used String 120 (see tanglepatterns.com) Biscus by Vicki Bassett Bandola by Sadelle Wiltshire Brix Box by Anneke Van Dam Knights Bridge (z(r) ) Balloya by Anya Lothrop and One more pattern that I can't find the name for anywhere. And I especially liked this one because it allowed me to create some sweet "flowers" on an otherwise austere looking tile. If anyone knows what this one is, please let me know. Learn more about the weekly Diva Challenge at iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com. This week's challenge looks fun - using All Boxed Up by Alice Hendon. The Diva Challenge gave us the option of doing a white on black tile or tangling a found object. Since I don't have a black tile or any black paper, I opted for tangling a found object. (learn more at http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/) First I tried doing the side of my tissue box -- it had beautiful colored stripes and I started placing quib on it, going in front of and behind the stripes, and of course crossing over it self. Not only did it start looking confusing, my ink started smearing every time I touched it. So I scrapped that idea. Then I noticed my Renuzit air freshner. It is white with a couple of swirls embossed on it. It's a slick plastic surface, but the embossed swirl sections have a texture. But I didn't want to ruin my pen nibs on it, so I opted for some gold metallic paint.
In honor of her upcoming 35th birthday, the Diva challenged us to use just 2 patterns. Dex has 3 letters and Bunzo 5. So, here ya' go!
The tile got so dark I thought I'd lighten it up with silver paint pen rather than the white gelly roll for highlights. I'm not too pleased with how that turned out. But it was really fun to do. Well, I haven't practiced my Galactic Basic Standard penmanship since I was in the first grade on planet Dagobah. Hopefully the letters Dorn, Isk, Vev and Aurek are somewhat legible. And of course you know what these letters spell -- Diva!
In her weekly challenge (http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com), the Diva challenged us to use 'Brella pattern by Bunny Wright. And Star Wars fan that Diva is (as am I), she was also celebrating May the 4th (be with you) on Monday. So I had to add a bit of Star Wars references. In addition to the use of Galactic Basic, if you look closely, you'll find Brella embellishing the Death Star. I also included Y-ful Power by Shoshi. I had fun with this one. Diva, if you'd like, I can send you this tile! The Diva (iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com) talks this week about the world of labyrinths and challenged us to use one as a string. when I finished drawing one based on Instructables by kiteman, I thought it looked like some oriental motifs. I planned to add some elements that would complement that theme but it took off in another direction. I used heartline by Helen Williams and beadlines by Margaret Brenner and a bunch of embellishments.
Thanks diva for introducing us to this a-MAZE-ing new world. The Diva challenged us to trace an object to create a new and interesting string. Her examples included game board pieces and small trinkets her kids got in their Easter baskets. I looked around and saw my way-cool letter openers that friends of ours bought from an artisan on a trip to Nigeria. Wanting to help spur the local economy, our friends bought lots of these carved wooden pieces and I ended up with three of them -- two men and a woman. I planned to merely trace the "business end" of one of the letter openers and let that serve as my string. But then that lovely lady said "Tangle me! Tangle me!" So I checked some Nigerian fashion websites for some inspiration. The lady in blue is a Nigerian bride and the pink fabric was in a dress catalog. Here is what I came up with.
