Joey is up to the letter S in her series of alphabet monotangle challenges. She's chosen the pattern Striping by Sandy Bartholomew. Learn more and see other submissions here.
Joey said to have fun with it. I can't say this pattern is particularly fun...UNTIL it's time to shade. Then all that time you spent filling in the stripes becomes worth it. That's where the magic is.
I started with String 178 (tanglepatterns.com). I had watched a youtube video on Striping in which the artist just started with a blank page - no strings or boundaries. But I couldn't quite pull that off, so I found using a string was much easier.
Now that it's completed, I've got several other ideas how I could have made better use of foreground/background areas. There's no time to explore them right now but that's the advantage of these challenges. It gives you an opportunity to work with patterns you may never have tried before and learn new insights you will apply in future works.
Thanks Joey and thanks for posting your "mistake." May all your mistakes turn out so wonderfully!
